Swimming with Sharks
Swimming in the ocean can be a dangerous endeavour. Sharks are not the only predator that you need to be considerate of... and predators in general are not the only danger found in the sea.
In the ocean, there are many species that protect themselves with poisons, sharp spines or both. Many of these ocean dwellers remain camouflaged and are easily startled. Some of the creatures that you should probably worry about include Stingrays, Jellyfish and Sharks.
The Ocean
The ocean itself can be a real danger simply because of it's power. When people drown or are injured in pools, it's often because they can't swim or they can't efficiently. When people drown in the ocean, it's frequently because they just don't understand or respect the sheer power of water. Rip currents are an especially powerful aspect of the sea and have claimed many lives. A rip current can form in any water with waves, including the Great Lakes, and can carry even the strongest swimmers out to sea. One of the keys to surviving a rip current is to swim laterally. Don't try to swim to shore because you will just be spinning your wheels. You should try to swim to the side of the rip current. Once you have escaped it's forces you can then begin to swim back into shore.
Rocks and Coral
Rocks and coral can ruin your day if you are not careful. You should never dive into waters that are murky or where you cannot see the bottom. If you dive into a rock then you could break your neck. Coral presents a similar problem. Coral is actually a living organism that is beautiful to look at. As beautiful as coral is to look at, it would be a bad idea to rub up along side of it. When most types of coral come in contact with human skin they will cause a significant rash that can become inflamed. The pain can be significant, but not unbearable. The pain usually goes away in about 24 hours.
Use Common Sense
In most cases, if you just use common sense, the ocean can be your friend. If you give it the respect that it deserves then you should be alright. Don't take chances with your life. If you are planning a boating excursion then be sure to notify people about your plans and file this plan with the local harbor master. If you are trying to be back in before dark or if you are trying to get somewhere before a storm hits then always error on the side of caution. If you are planning a day at the beach then come prepared. Be sure to bring sunscreen, a first aid kit and floating devices. Always be sure to respect the signs that have been posted along the beach.
